In this wide-ranging conversation, Dutch talks about writing Up in Honey’s Room, his 41st novel—a wartime Detroit story with escaped German POWs, a Nazi butcher who looks like Himmler, a hopeless spy ring, and Honey Deal caught in the middle. He explains how Carl Webster goes after the POWs, why he always lets his characters steer the story, and the fun of writing oddball conspirators and easy-going Nazis who’d rather flirt than fight.
He also reflects on trying to capture how people really talked in the ’30s and ’40s, and gives a glimpse of what was next: a new novel that would bring together Jack Foley from Out of Sight, Dawn Navarro from Riding the Rap, and Cundo Rey from LaBrava—all landing in Venice Beach, California.
