Larry Mirisch

Son of legendary producer Walter Mirisch, reflecting on his father’s work and friendship with Dutch

Legendary Hollywood producer Walter Mirisch first worked with Dutch on Mr. Majestyk, which became a very successful film directed by Richard Fleischer, starring Charles Bronson.

Dutch began sending Walter each new book. When Get Shorty arrived, it was dedicated to him — “one of the good guys,” acknowledging his decency in a business which can be pretty cut-throat.

Their friendship grew. When La Brava came along, they both were hopeful of making a great feature until Dustin Hoffman backed out of the deal.

Larry reflects on how Dutch turned this negative experience into positive gold for his Hollywood novel Get Shorty.

He describes the lasting friendship and respect that his dad and Dutch had for one other.
